WS39: Differentiating Emotional Disturbance and Social Maladjustment: Legal, Assessment, and Treatment Implications

Friday, February 15, 2013 12:30 PM–3:30 PM

Differentiating between emotional disturbance (ED) and social maladjustment (SM) creates controversy and possible denial of services to students with emotional and conduct problems. This workshop will focus on (a) the clinical aspects of differentiating ED and SM; (b) legally defensible functional behavioral assessments, behavior intervention plans, and Individualized Education Programs; and (c) relevant case law to inform decisions about schools’ legal responsibility for treating children’s behavior. Lecture, discussions, and review of case material will improve participants’ skills to meet legal requirements.
