WS029: Rethinking PBS and RTI: Essential Changes Needed to Improve Services

Numerous Positive Behavioral Support and RTI practices, advocated by our national technical assistance centers, must be reconsidered as they result in ineffective, inappropriate, and even harmful student services. Among those discussed—with effective solutions: universal screening, multi-tiered interventions, functional assessment, deficit-oriented approaches to behavior, student percentages “within the tiers,” “universal” Tier 2 interventions, tiered instruction versus intervention.
