WS043: Improving Adolescent Literacy in Light of the Common Core State Standards: Research to Practice

Description:

A recent research summary from the Institute of Education Sciences has clarified five recommendations for improving adolescent literacy that are especially important in light of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS Initiative) (see http://ies.ed.gov/ncee/wwc/practiceguide.aspx?sid=8). Dr. Feldman will guide an exploration of research-to-practice pragmatic applications of these instructional tools using modeling, video demonstration, and classroom simulations. He will emphasize the critical role of systematically developing student engagement, academic vocabulary, and critical thinking across all content areas for grades 6–12. Dr. Feldman will guide participants in exploring how validated tools for teacher feedback—including classroom video, collaborative teacher coaching teams or “learning walks,” and peer and expert coaching, plus a professional learning community (PLC)—can create a culture of competence that results in significant instructional improvement, especially for English language learners and special education and other at-risk learners.
