PO019: Prompting Faster Reading: The Impact of Comprehension Measures

Consistent we previous research, we increased sixth- and eighth-grade students’ WCPM by instructing them to read fast. Participants instructed to read fast were subsequently instructed to either do their best reading, or do their best reading because they would answer questions. Both group decreased their WCPM to baseline levels. The ease of inflating WCPM scores during oral reading fluency assessments and the need for comprehension measures in these assessments will be discussed.
