PA061: From Bystanders to Upstanders: Defending Behavior in Bullying

Thursday, February 20, 2014 10:00 AM–10:50 AM

Considering the impact of peers on bullying, it is important to consider the influence of bystanders. An important group of students to understand within a bullying context are those who engage in defending behavior. The present study utilized latent class analysis to empirically define defender groups. Hope, empathy, school connectedness, and self-efficacy were examined to see if they differentiate students who intervene versus those who remain uninvolved. Implications for targeted intervention will be discussed.
